• January 1-August 9, 2009: 4 homicides, 19 rapes and attempted, 169 robberies and attempted, and 188 aggravated assaults.
DUDLEY SQUARE (ROXBURY) & GROVE HALL
District B2:
• January 1-August 9, 2009: 8 homicides, 41 rapes and attempted, 223 robberies and attempted, 430 aggravated assaults.
ROXBURY:
• Total of 55,663 residents
• 15% of the population is between 15-24 years old
• Median household income is $27,133
• 27.1% of the population is living in poverty
GROVE HALL:
• Three census tracks run through Grove Hall which includes 9,053 people.
• Median household income ranges from $18,571 to $29,696
• Residents south of Washington Street earn the highest income and have the lowest number of people living below the poverty line (19.6%).
• Almost 33% of individuals living east of Humboldt Avenue live below the poverty line.
• 34-61% of residents are under 18 years old.
Gang activity, while less serious than in the early 1990s, increased in 2001 and 2002. According to police authorities in the B2 Police District, Grove Hall also has the highest rate of violent crime among youth in the city. Gun traffic arrests are at the rate of about two to three per shift, and incidences of young teens with guns are increasing in Districts 2 and 3.
MORTON & NORFOLK:
Mattapan Proper:
• Total of 37,371 residents
• 14.7% of the population is 15-24 years old
• Median household income is $32,749
• 22.3% of the population is living in poverty
District B3:
• January 1-August 9, 2009: 4 homicides, 17 rapes and attempted, 128 robberies and attempted, and 364 aggravated assaults.
In the past, residents felt that Mattapan was underserved by public community centers, with only one, isolated community center serving the entire neighborhood. The opening of the Mildred Avenue Middle School and Community Center in 2003 improved access.
BOWDOIN & GENEVA:
Dorchester Proper:
• Total of 92,862 residents
• 15.9% of the population is between 15-24 years old
• The median household income in North Dorchester is $36,193 and $39,657 in South Dorchester
• 17.8% of the population is living in poverty
District C11:
• January 1-August 9, 2009: 10 homicides, 21 rapes and attempted, 197 robberies and attempted, 344 aggravated assaults.
The Boston Police identified the Esmond Street area of Dorchester off Blue Hill Avenue as one of eight "hot spots" of gun violence in the summer of 2000. Mass arrests have taken place there, with up to 29 arrests occurring at one time.
