The Haiti Fund at the Boston Foundation is an expression of the greater Boston community’s concern for the people of Haiti, and their local Boston friends and relatives. After the earthquake of January 2010, this five-year fund was created to provide relief and reconstruction support to communities in Haiti and Haitian-Americans in the greater Boston area.

Governed by a 36-person Advisory Council, the vast majority of whom are Haitian or Haitian American, the Haiti Fund firmly believes that Haitians should be at the center of reconstruction efforts. For long-term sustainability to be achieved, we must build the capacity of the government and civil society to meet the needs of the people.

The five-year fund is now in its final year and recently released an RFR for its final round of grants supporting long term reconstruction efforts in Haiti. Started with a $1 million challenge grant from Jim and Karen Ansara, The fund has subsequently grown to over $3 million from more than 1640 donors. To date, we have made a total of 109 grants – 20 in Boston and 89 in Haiti totaling nearly $2 million. Our grants typically range from $9,000 to $25,000 with an emphasis on finding and building the capacity of grassroots organizations traditionally overlooked. With our modest funds we focus our efforts outside of Port-au-Prince and hope to have a positive impact in the areas of education, housing and rural livelihoods. We also recognize the tremendous impact of the earthquake on Haitians in the Greater Boston area and will continue to provide support to the local community in the years ahead.

Haiti Fund releases an RFR for its final round of grants

Please be advised the sixth and final grant cycle of the Haiti Fund (Spring 2014) will focus on grantmaking for capacity building. In the last four years, our 109 grants and other efforts have helped us build relationships and partnerships that will endure and benefit rural communities and partners. Consequently, to further deepen these relationships, we have restricted this cycle to invitations to selected past and current grantees.
