Boston Foundation releases Northeastern report on the importance of manufacturing to state’s economy: ‘Making things’ promotes innovation, well-paid jobs, economic growth
Boston –Conventional wisdom may relegate manufacturing to the ash heap of earlier centuries, but new research undertaken by the Center for Urban and Regional Policy at Northeastern University and released today by the Boston Foundation establishes not only the importance of manufacturing as a potent part of the regional economy but its role as a catalyst for future growth. Today, almost 10 percent of the state’s workforce is employed in manufacturing, creating almost $40 billion worth of goods annually. The sector retains more than 8,600 firms that are technologically sophisticated and well positioned to compete successfully in the emerging global economy.

Development of pilot schools has failed to keep pace with community interest, says Boston Foundation
New research underscores impact, popularity of the pilot school modelBoston – Recent news that one new pilot school has been approved by the office of the Superintendent and the Boston Teachers Union and one existing pilot school will expand was praised by Boston Foundation President and CEO Paul S. Grogan, who also expressed concern that the overall increase in the number of pilot schools has failed to keep pace with strong interest on the part of Boston families and still represents a missed opportunity for the school system as a whole.

The Boston Foundation June grants address issues in housing, education, workforce development: $23.M in grants includes media partnerships, civic engagement strategies
Boston –The Boston Foundation Board of Directors today announced almost $24 million in grants to a range of nonprofits serving residents of Greater Boston. That broad distribution contained a strategic focus on sectors that are closely related to the region’s ability to continue to thrive and to be economically competitive—including education, workforce development and the nonprofit sector.  Housing remained an important sector for grants, as well, with a new focus on the recent foreclosure crisis.

Boston Foundation announces grants for summer programs for at-risk city youths: Funders join in $750K fund to expand positive opportunities
Boston –More than 70 organizations that provide safe, supervised programs for city youth after school during the summer will receive financial support enabling them to expand their hours of operation. This is the third year that funders, led by the Boston Foundation, have made an investment beyond their usual funding of summer programs to combat an increase in violence.

Boston Foundation releases landmark study of nonprofit organizations in Massachusetts
A report released by the Boston Foundation provides the most comprehensive portrait to date of the nonprofit sector in the Commonwealth, identifying the wide range of organizations it includes and the myriad roles they play in the Commonwealth—as well as the significance the sector holds in aggregate for the regional economy. Included in the report, titled Passion & Purpose: Raising the Fiscal Fitness Bar for Massachusetts Nonprofits, is a “call to action” in the form of recommendations that address significant financial and organizational weaknesses in the sector that emerged from this unprecedented scrutiny.
