| Using architectural design to connect a city to its art gallery and change the way visitors view art. |
| Description |
|
The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) commissioned Toronto-born architect Frank Gehry to design Transformation AGO, an expansion that will respect the building's history while strengthening the museum's connection to the city. The extensive use of glass in Gehry's design will let natural light flow and open up the gallery to the surrounding streets. The expansion will also provide visitors with unparalleled behind-the-scenes access to museum functions. Visible storage and conservation displays within gallery spaces will give visitors insight into how the museum cares for art, while computer stations will make art displays interactive. The $254 million expansion is scheduled to open in 2008.
- 97,000 square foot expansion will increase viewing space by 47%
- Donations by Kenneth Thomson and others add over 10,000 works to the collection
- Online access to exhibitions for students and teachers
